ASTER will transmit as much as 780 scenes of data to the ground receiving station day after day. ASTER Ground Data System (ASTER
GDS) receives and processes those data to Level 1 products.
Level 1/ Geometric/DEM WG develops algorithms to generate Level 1 Product, make the validation plan, and defines the specification of Level 1 product. Their mission goes far to do the same for Ortho Product, one type of ASTER semi-standard data products.
ASTER has the capability for collecting same orbit stereo data in Base/Height ratio of 0.6, with a combination of its nadir-viewing telescope (Band 3N) and its only backward viewing telescope (Band 3B), both covering each part of the near infrared region.
The Working Group develops and refines algorithms and designs a validation scheme for generating digital elevation model (DEM) products with such stereo data used.
The ASTER DEM products are divided into Relative-DEMs and Absolute-DEMs. A Relative-DEM is to be generated as a Semi-Standard product, while an Absolute-DEM is planned generated as a Special Product.
: for the Absolute-DEM requires Ground Control Points (GCPs).
