Operation & Mission Planning (OMP) Working Group takes roles of developing ASTER scheduling algorithms and mission analysis tools, and will establish the ASTER data acquisition policy.

Because ASTER is a high-spatial-resolution multispectral imaging sensor, the data rate will be enormous to reach as much as 89.2 Mbps at peak. The two-orbit maximum average rate allocated for ASTER, however, is restricted to 8.3 Mbps. Along the restriction, maximum operational time allowed for ASTER instruments is eight minutes, for daytime (with full mode) plus eight minutes for nighttime (with TIR mode).

Given such conditions, appropriate mission scheduling is essential for an efficient operation of ASTER.
