 Higher Level Data Products WG

Chair : Minoru Urai, AIST

ASTER was developed responding to many calls from those in the field of geology and those who exploit natural resources, for capturing detailed geologic information and monitoring volcanic eruptions. It covers as many as six short wave infrared bands and five thermal infrared bands, thereby respectively enhancing capabilities to detect minerals from their reflectance and evaluate silica contents of rock from their radiation pattern.

Geology Working Group develops algorithms featuring such advantages for volcano monitoring and rock/mineral mapping and designs the scheme for validation. And they also seek methods to apply ASTER data to the geological science.

The WG is also to generate and maintain spectral libraries, with which to process ASTER data and validate the resulting Products. The spectral libraries will archive spectral data for rocks, minerals, soils, plants and others and are planned to serve as a database for ASTER science project.
