ASTER data utilization

Image Database for Volcanoes

In the ASTER science team, the global volcano observation using ASTER launched in 1999 was planed, and has been performed.
Consequently, by present, a lot of volcano observation data is accumulated.

In order to use these data effectively, to make a database of observation data is desired, and the volcano satellite image database was developed by M. Urai.

Cloud assessment of ASTER Data New!!

The cloud % in ASTER data are based on automatical cloud assessment algorithm. But they are inaccurate in nighttime scenes and daytime scenes when ASTER shortwave infrared bands stopped. Dr. H.Tonooka (ASTER science team member) developed "1km-Resolusion Cloud Mask for all ASTER Scene Database" using MODIS data.
It's useful to get the cloud distribution of ASTER scene. All reassessment results are transferred to ASTER Ground Data System (GDS) everyday, and then input to the database used for ASTER image search (IMS).

Crosstalk phenomenon

A crosstalk phenomenon is a phenomenon in which dispersion of the incidence light on detection surface of SWIR leaks to other bands, especially from the band 4 to the band 5 and 9.
A crosstalk phenomenon generates on the occasion of use of a SWIR picture in the place where DN values significantly change, such as a land-and-sea boundary part and inland.

Crosstalk correction software is available from the GDS web site below.

Radiometric accuracy and Re-calibration
Radiometric Calibration WG updates the radiometric calibration algorithm for maintenance of the radiometric accuracy. It conducts the vicarious calibration to validate the accuracy and investigates the method of re-calibration.
